Barry Ferguson’s Floral Extravaganza is a highlight of the 2008 National Rose Show in the Expo Hall on Saturday and Sunday November 15 and 16.
The Northland District Rose Society, which this year celebrates its 60th birthday, is hosting the Rose Show and convention. Barry Ferguson will appear at Capitaine Bougainville Theatre on the Sunday afternoon.
Ferguson has enjoyed extraordinary success, having had a floral business in New York for 30 years, during which time he has ‘done flowers’ for Malcolm Forbes, Donald Trump, the Rockefellers, Steven Spielberg’s wedding, parties in Central Park and Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The list goes on.
He’s had a book published, (Living With Flowers) has travelled widely, and made a guest appearance on Good Morning America.
Barry has also led nature tours to China, the most recent with horticulturalists to see native camellia, magnolia and other flowering trees. As a botanist, he has led tours to many countries including Nepal, India, the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, South Africa, Guatemala and of course New Zealand, as well as the Caribbean, and to Brazil to see orchids.
But for Barry it’s miracles of nature which delight him most.
Show convenor Viv Donaldson says visitors will be able to view entries in three competition classes – Large Roses; Miniature Roses; and Floral Art.
The 15 floral art categories include Northland’s Coastline; Reflections; Through The Ages (arrangements depicting an event or fashion 1940-2000); and New Beginnings (bridal bouquets to reflect the year 1948, when spectacular bridal bouquets first became ‘en vogue’).
There will be a display of wedding dresses, one depicting each of the decades since 1948, complemented by matching bouquets for the period, kindly provided by local florists.
Open to the public from 11am-5pm on Saturday, 10am-4pm on Sunday. Entry is by gold coin donation.
However, tickets to J Barry Ferguson’s Floral Extravaganza on Sunday at 1pm cost $20. Bookings are encouraged.
